Furniture purchasing, in practice

Sofa Cushion Firmness and Foam Density Need Separate Decisions

Compare sofa cushion samples without using foam density as a firmness label. Record the complete build, seated observations and accepted version for your order.

“Make the sofa firmer” is a useful starting point, but it is not enough to order the next cushion. The buyer may mean less initial sinking, a different feeling after settling into the seat, or easier movement when standing. Ask which experience needs to change before requesting a different foam.

Keep the foam description separate from the comfort decision

The Polyurethane Foam Association distinguishes density, which measures mass per unit volume, from firmness. A higher density figure does not by itself mean a firmer foam. Ask for the proposed material identity and firmness information as separate fields; do not replace either with the phrase high density.

The Modern Bamboo Lounge Sofa allows seat and back cushioning to be reviewed against a comfort brief. It does not publish one standard foam grade or a guaranteed firmness. The required outcome therefore belongs in the sample discussion, not in an assumed catalog specification.

Compare the cushions on the intended seat

A loose piece of foam on a desk is not the finished sofa. For an agreed comparison, identify the frame, cushion dimensions, foam or filling arrangement, wrap and cover used in each sample. Keep unchanged parts identifiable so that a reviewer knows what the comparison is testing.

If one sample also changes the cover construction or cushion thickness, record those differences. Do not describe the result as a foam-only comparison. Seat and back cushions should have separate references when their builds differ.

Write observations someone else can act on

Agree who will review the samples and how the intended use will be represented. Record observations in words, alongside the sample identity. A comfort review does not establish a load rating, durability result or suitability for every user; those requirements need their own evidence.

Carry the accepted build into the quotation

For the three-seat sofa reference, keep the accepted cushion build tied to the selected sofa configuration. If the order also includes the upholstered lounge chair, review that chair rather than transferring the sofa decision automatically.

The upholstery guide covers textile and care decisions. For a sofa comfort enquiry, send the product reference, quantities, current concern and sample comparison notes. Ask which cushion proposal, sampling work and unresolved evidence the quotation includes.
