Furniture Delivery Without a Loading Dock: What Must Be Agreed Before Booking

Specify the unloading point, equipment, loaded dimensions and receiving responsibilities before booking furniture delivery to a site without a loading dock.

The truck reaching the correct address is not the same as the furniture reaching the receiving floor. A delivery booked without a clear unloading arrangement can stop at the vehicle, even when the furniture would fit through the building entrance.

Describe the actual stopping and unloading point

Provide the access address, permitted vehicle approach, receiving hours and any appointment requirement. Identify whether there is a loading dock, suitable unloading equipment or a need to request a vehicle-mounted liftgate. The site team and carrier should confirm the arrangement, not infer it from the building’s postal address.

FedEx’s freight packing guidance notes that a liftgate can be requested where no dock is available and that its size and weight limits matter. Confirm the limits of the service actually being booked; a liftgate is not an unrestricted solution for every furniture load.

Check the completed package against the equipment

The 160 × 80 cm trapezoid-base table provides a product reference, not the footprint or gross mass of its shipment. The carrier needs the packed unit, including any pallet and protection.

Unloading information to confirm
InformationWhy it matters
Packed dimensions and gross weightEquipment must accommodate the actual transport unit
Dock or liftgate arrangementDefines how goods move from vehicle to receiving level
Ground and approach conditionsCarrier and site team assess equipment access
Receiving staff and appointmentSomeone must be available for the agreed handover
After-unloading scopeNames who moves the goods onward and removes packaging

Do not assume manual lifting will solve an equipment mismatch. Ask competent handling personnel to determine the method; this guide does not specify crew size or a lifting procedure.

Separate unloading from movement inside the building

Clarify where the carrier’s agreed service ends and the site team’s work begins. Ground-level unloading, inside delivery, room placement, assembly and removal of packaging are different tasks. Ask which are included in the actual offer rather than relying on the word delivery.

The building-route review starts with doorways, lifts and turns after the receiving point. It does not replace agreement on how the goods leave the truck.

Reconfirm changes before the vehicle is dispatched

A blocked dock, a different vehicle or a larger packed unit changes the unloading question. Give the relevant party the revised information and obtain confirmation before dispatch. Do not assume additional handling is included or improvise a site instruction that the carrier has not accepted.

For a furniture delivery enquiry, send the item schedule and receiving details together. The resulting confirmation should identify a usable handover point, not merely repeat the delivery address.
